Biography
My first role on stage was a cloud, and I’m pleased to say that more than 40 years later, I’m still researching how to be a cloud.
The early years
~ Dance, theater, music, writing, track & field, and art filled my cup.
~ At 8 traveled the world with my Mom, living first in Kyoto and then wandering our way back home. The world opened up.
~ At 12 self-published a small book of poetry and art to raise funds to attend a citizen diplomacy camp in the then USSR.
Independence
~ At 15 the opportunity arose to live on my own in NYC and audition for theater, TV and film. It yielded no fame and fortune, but many rich life experiences.
~ Attended the North Carolina School of the Arts for my senior year of high school to study Theater.
University era
~ An intensive study of movement at New York University’s Experimental Theater Wing, under the guidance of many stellar teachers.
~ Performed in productions directed by Annie-B Parson & Paul Lazar and Maureen Flemming.
~ Highlight was a tour of Eastern Europe with La MaMa’s Great Jones Repertory Company in a dance opera version of “Oedipus”.
Out in the world
~ Spent a summer in Scotland, working in a pub and learning how to pour a good pint.
~ Lived for a few years in South East Asia- working a job in communications in India, traveling the Himalayas, trekking through Nepal and experiencing Malaysia and Indonesia.
Dancing in Japan
~ Joined Min Tanaka’s farm and dance company, Tokason, in the countryside of Japan in 1997 where the exploration of dance deepened exponentially.
~ From 1997-2002, danced in dozens of performances under Tanaka’s direction. Pieces played in theaters large and small in Japan, the United States and Europe, as well as in rice fields, forests and museums.
Farming in Japan
~ As part of Tokason, farmed vegetables, rice and green tea.
~ Learned how to make traditional pickles from the old farmers next door, how to hang up persimmons in the winter to dry them, how to make charcoal from bamboo, how to cook rice over fire, how to repair the delicate paper of the shoji screens, how to let the world and the work inform the dance.
In the Jungle
~ From 2003-2005, lived on an off-grid homestead on the island of Maui and continued to explore the body in relation to nature, through Permaculture, landscaping, gardening and solo performances.
~ Grew much of my own food and once again spent most of the time under the open sky.
Family
~ In 2005, 10 days after meeting, got engaged to life-partner, Shinichi. It was an arranged marriage, we just don’t know who arranged it.
~ Had our first child in 2006. Joined Shinichi’s company, inkBoat, and have been involved in almost all inkBoat productions since 2007.
~ In 2011, while pregnant with our second child, made my directorial debut with inkBoat’s award-winning production of “Line Between.” He was born on a Saturday and the premiere was one week later.

The Lost Coast Chapter
~ For a decade made our life in Northern California, bouncing between the Bay Area and the Lost Coast of Humboldt County.
~ Together with some dear friends, turned an old barn in the countryside into a dance studio and began teaching our “Dance on Land” intensives there. The research between dance and the natural world that was kindled during the time in Japan with Min was the driving force behind the explorations at these intensives. “Dance on Land” events continue to this day, and are constantly evolving practical laboratories of some of our most impelling questions.
Dancing with Anna
~ During the California chapter had the great privilege of working with Anna Halprin as a mentor, teacher and director.
~ Performed in several of her works including the iconic “Parades and Changes”
~ Shinichi and I honored to be choreographed by her in a piece called “Song of Songs” a rendering of the long and storied love affair with her life partner, Lawrence Halprin.
The Internal Arts
~ Began studying Chinese Internal Arts in 2014.
~ In 2021 received the great honor of becoming a 17th generation Wudang San Feng Pai lineage holder through Shifu David Wei of Wudang West.
The Switzerland Adventure
~ The family embarked on a wonderful adventure in 2017- relocating to Luzern, Switzerland.
~ Many creative collaborations with local artists ensued.
~ Found found some of the highest caliber movement training available, including The Axis Syllabus© and Fighting Monkey.
~ Mentored by Jozef Frucek of Fighting Monkey since early 2021 and am now an “Inspired by FM” instructor.
~ Currently split our time between Switzerland and the Hudson Valley, NY. Come find us!
Unfolding
~ When the pandemic hit, began to be approached by people asking for mentorship, and this is largely how the mentorship program “Unfolding” unfolded.
